This Saturday in Nottingham, UK, the fight to determine who the second best Super Middleweight in the world is on.  The UK's Carl "The Cobra" Froch, the Super Six tournament runner-up, will be taking on the IBF Super Middleweight Champion, the explosive Lucian Bute, in the first fight of what is supposed to be a two-fight deal between the two fighters, with one fight being in the UK(Froch's hometown) and one in Canada(Bute's hometown).  Let's take a look at the two fighters.

Two-time world title challenger Alfonso Gomez was left disappointed last week when he was forced to pull out of a high-profile bout with Jessie Vargas on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather vs. Miguel Cotto, which takes place this coming Saturday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The likeable 31 year-old, who shot to fame coming third on the first series of The Contender in 2004, has been suffering from back spasms in training leading to him being replaced by another former Contender star in Stevie Forbes and Gomez told WBN of his intention to face the winner of next week’s 140lb bout.

“I'm doing therapy right now at the Chivas USA Training Center with their head therapist Anthony Garcia and I’ve been doing that for a week now and will continue till its healed up,” Gomez told World Boxing News.

“Steve Forbes is an excellent fighter when he comes in at 100 percent, but given the time frame it all depends on Steve.

Undercard: Jesse Vargas vs Alfonso Gomez

Shortly after Saturday night’s Brandon Rios-Richard Abril bout inside of the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, I caught up with undefeated welterweight hopeful Jessie Vargas and got his take on what we had all just seen.

Rios, a former champion at 135 pounds, has been under some criticism for once again failing to make the lightweight limit prior to the contest and for not finding a way to break through offensively against his awkward Cuban foe. Scores of 116-112 and 115-113 were read in Rios’ favor, with a 117-111 tally against him, but there were those in attendance and watching on pay-per-view who felt that Abril’s boxing and counterpunching tactics were employed well enough to warrant him the win.

Giving his take as he watched from ringside, Vargas seemed sympathetic to Rios’ struggle.
